Prof. Eniola Oloruntobi ADENIYI was born on March 8,1940 at Oke'sa Quarters, Alade-Idanre, Ondo State into the Clergy family of John and Janet Adeniyi both of blessed memory. His Christian values were to significantly influence his life and choices in the years to come.
Prof. Adeniyi was brought up in the Mission House where he lacked nothing until the eve of his ninth birthday when his father died. The death of his father was very tragic for him and he went through traumatic experiences in wading his way through rough and bumpy roads in order to excel as an Academician and become recognised in Nigeria and the world in the areas of economic and social development planning.
Prof. Adeniyi began his primary education at CAC Primary School, Igede-Ekiti and ended at ST. Paul's' Anglican School Odode-Idanre in December 1953. For his working career he started as clerk/houseboy/vendor in 1954 followed by working as a pupil teacher at Local Authority School Opa-Idanre (1955-56). In 1957 he gained admission into Ondo/Oyo Joint Provincial Teachers' Grade II College, Ile-Ife where he obtained his Teachers' Certificate Grade II in December 1960. He returned to Idanre where he worked as a Primary School Headmaster and in November 1961, he was seconded to Olofin Anglican Grammar School as a Teacher. From there, he gained admission to the University of Ibadan 1964 where he did his B.A. Hons. and Ph.D. Degrees. He served as the president of the student Christian Movement of the university during part of this period. He began his working career at NISER, University of Ibadan in March 1970 as a Research Fellow and by 1978 he rose to become a Professor of Development Planning.
Prof. Adeniyi voluntarily retired from the public sector in 1990 and set up a private consultancy firm and he was President of Development Research Bureau (DRB), a firm of Consultants based in Bodija, Ibadan. He was Chairman of ADABOL Investments Ltd. and ADABOL Petroleum Company.
Prof Adeniyi had the privilege of serving in many capacities and roles but, with the right perspective, the most important to him were as a husband, father, relative & friend. From these roles, most of us came to know him. And then there were, well, one or two more enumerated in a seperate chapter: Varied Official roles in which Prof served.
Prof. Adeniyi was happily married to his sweetheart, Felicia. He is blessed with children and grandchildren. Earlier in the year prior to his death, he celebrated his 70th birthday. Just a month prior to his death, he had the privilege of celebrating the wedding of his youngest son.
Grandpa Adeniyi died on September 29th, 2010. Yet he lives on, in each of the lives he touched, sometimes with a kind word, sometimes, kind counsel. Other times, it was with financial enabling, strategic introductions, help with educational or occupational advancement or just by being there, a silent (or vocal support).
Therefore never could it be more true, "The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it."- William James
The most important thing Prof Adeniyi did was to help his neighbour. May we all who have survived Prof Adeniyi seek to honour his memory by doing this one thing:
‘YOU GO AND DO LIKEWISE!’
