TRIBUTE TO LATE PROF. ENIOLA OLORUNTOBI ADENIYI BY PROF TUNJI AKANDE DIRECTOR-GENERAL, NISER. Prof. Eniola O. Adeniyi joined the services of the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) on 3rd March, 1970 as a Junior Research Fellow. He had earlier served the old Ondo State Government, as a Teacher, for fifteen years – from 8th March, 1955 to 2nd March, 1970. By the approval of the then Head of Service of the Federation, his earlier teaching service years were later merged with his public service on 29th October, 1981. As a research staff of the Institute, Prof. Adeniyi rose through the ranks of the research staff cadre to the position of Research Professor on 1st April, 1978. While in the service of the Institute, Prof. Adeniyi was a brilliant scholar who easily combined outstanding academic competence with commendable managerial abilities. He held the fort for the Director (now Director-General) of the Institute on several occasions when the Director was away on other national assignments. He also served as the Head of the Physical Planning Division of the Institute from 1st January 1972 to 31st December, 1975, and later from 1st January, 1982 to 31st December, 1984. In October, 1983 he was appointed Director of the Manpower Development Department (now Human Resource Development and Utilisation Department), a post he held until his retirement on 31st March, 1990. Apart from the Institute activities, Prof. Adeniyi was also involved in some external activities. In 1979, he was appointed a Member of the old Ondo State Executive Advisory Council by his Excellency, the then Governor of the State. In August 1982, he was also elected a member of the Governing Council of the Society for International Development, Rome. On 18th July, 1986, he was appointed Chairman of the Committee of Experts for the production of a National Transport Policyby the then Minister of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Aviation. On 1st July, 1989, Prof. Adeniyi was appointed Chairman of Odu’a Investment Company Subsidiary – Nigerian-Romanian Wood Ind. Ltd. by the then Military Governor of Ondo State – Captain Okhai Mike Akhigbe. The Late Prof. Adeniyi was a recipient of many scholarships and awards which included the Johns Hopkins University Scholarship, Baltimore, Maryland, USA (1973) and the British Council Fellowship (1974/75). He travelled widely to attend several international/national Conferences and Workshops, and had to his credit several scholarly publications He was a member of many Learned Societies, which included the Nigerian Economic Society, and the Regional Science Association (U.K). Prof. Adeniyi’s motto was “there is enough to go round if we all care to share.” He demonstrated his belief in the motto when on 18th November, 1982 he donated a beautiful Quart Wall Clock for use in the Institute’s Seminar Room. The gesture was the first of its kind in the Institute and it was commended by the then Director-General, Prof. Vremudia Diejomaoh. No doubt, the late Prof. Adeniyi contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) for which this nation owes him an appreciation. Prof Adeniyi was a scholar, a teacher, mentor, researcher and one of the founding fathers of modern NISER. We shall all miss him greatly. May his soul find peaceful rest in the bosom of the Lord.
