Smart Fadayomi 15th October 2010

How and where do I start to pay tribute to an icon, a quintessential professional to the core, a role model, a stickler for details, philanthropist per excellence, bridge builder who is humility personified, selfless pillar in the family and community, a Servant Leader and an internationally recognized Resource person. You set very high standards through hard work and dedication to Excellence for all others to emulate. You passionately believed in education and no wonder you ran a scholarship scheme for decades for many underprivileged but brilliant students many of whom made it to the University level. I recall very vividly your support for us even during our primary school days in the late 50’s. From your very meager scholarship allowance as a student at the Ondo/Oyo Joint Provincial Teachers’ Grade II College, you bought books for us and in particular the Yoruba magazine “AWORERIN” which you regularly bought for Franklin Adegbesote (Of blessed memory) and myself. As a Community bridge builder, you always sought to make peace and create harmony within the community. You understood the dynamics of dichotomy or even ‘ trichotomy’ and the need to galvanize the people’s effort to a formidable goal. You passionately believed Odo-Ode, Alade and Atosin should peacefully live together as constituents of the IDANRE Kingdom. Your many reconciliation moves and meetings with all the Royal heads remain evergreen. One just hopes that, at least for your memory, they would sheathe their swords and work for the common good of the people for peace and progress in the land. I also recall with fond memories your support for me at all times. Is it when I met my wife and there were issues to resolve or your trips with us to Nnewi for Dr Olumide Fadayomi’s wedding or indeed Yinka’s wedding in Lagos or High Chief Fadayomi Lisa’s installation in 1996 and the elaborate burial ceremonies on his transition in 2006. Prof, you are one in a million! You were loved and appreciated by your family. Even during your last hospitalization we never knew you will not make it as you were almost being discharged. Your lovely wife of over four decades Aunty Feli was already making preparations for your home coming by arranging for an encased bath shower for your comfort. That shower contrivance was to be delivered to Ibadan on September 30 morning but alas you gave up the ghost on September 29 evening! Death, where is they sting? Prof, you rose from a humble beginning to the pinnacle of your career and you were internationally recognised as a Resource person having consulted for the Federal Government of Nigeria, World Bank, UNESCO USAID, WHO etc. You were a rare gem who touched so many lives positively. What a loss! We shall never forget you. It is not how long one lives that matters but how well. You lived well and made a formidable impact in our world. Please proceed on the journey to eternal life as we believe you will sit at the right hand side of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ where your place in heaven is assured and reserved. Seeing you again Prof on Resurrection morning. The bond between you and my mum Madam Julianah Mojisola Fadayomi (of blessed memory) in particular was terrific and almost indescribable as she truly loved and appreciated you. The entire Fadayomi clan remembers you for all you have done for us as individuals and as a collective. We all wish you a deserved rest in the Lord. ADIEU, I just keep crying and weeping as I write this short tribute! Smart Ladi Fadayomi On behalf of Fadayomi Family.
